John
The old school photos are in storage, once retrieved I will scan and send them to you with a listing of names that I can remember.
However from postings on the website, there seems to be a void during my years, hopefully I can assist in that regard.
A couple of interesting things not mentioned, but assist in cross checks from Alumni.
During the time of constructing the new machine shop / woodwork rooms in the mid 80s (the old Graphics House), classes were conducted at Richmond Tech.
Serge Herrick classes in Horticulture and field trips to the Botanical Gardens.
Classes conducted at the Collingwood Children’s farm.
The merging of Clifton Hill and Abbotsford schools, and the introduction of new students and very briefly 2 uniforms.
I remember my class was 7C and Paul Noreika was home teacher and Carlo In…. was class Captain. Unfortunately I cannot recall class / sport colours.
Br Don Wedd, Harry Dunks was a science teacher, …. Milne taught maths, and there were two female P/E teachers named Ryan who replaced Vic Issells .
Graham Kelly managed the front office / administration.
Some more student names Peter Dimitrakopolos, Damian Ryan, Armando Moschentino, Javier O’Campo and Tim Ryan
Kind regards

Best wishes to all SJTC south men for the new year. I haven't linked in to the web site for a while so lots of reading to do. I was prompted to have a look again because I was at the 50th for Paul & Steve Mitchell - just imagine turning 50 - it was a wonderful night of reconnection.
Thanks Shamus for listing the names of teachers & students - good to remind the failing brain of an oldie.
I hear that Bernie McHugh has just retired as a primary principal from Ressurection school in West St. Albans.
Best wishes to all. Frank |

Greetings to all,
Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year and best of luck for 2010.
JOFA taught Tech drawing between 1971 - 1974 if my memory serves me right. There was a lay teacher I remember we called 'Shaker Maker' but I can't remember what his name was or what he taught. I also remember going on a class camp to Lake Eildon where Shaker brought along his ferets, nedless to say, we had rabbit for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Anyway, best wishes to you all for a prosperous 2010. Yes Mick, I will have to dig up my green shirt, grey trousers and dust coat for the reunion, can't gaurantee they will still fit though. |
|
Happy New Year
As I contemplate my son's 18th birthday today. I hope he has as many happy memories of his time at school as I do of my time at St Joe's South Melb. |
|
It was sad to hear that Mr Mac He was a very good man who taught me how to play the Eb bass at St Vincent

Santa was getting ready for his annual trip but there were problems everywhere.Four elves were drunk and the trainee elves were not producing toys as fast as the regular ones causing Santa frustration as he fell behind schedule.
Then Mrs.Claus announced that her mother was coming to stay fpr a while.More stress.
When he went out to harness the reindeer he discovered that three of them were about to give birth, two had jumped the fence and escaped.More stress.
Then when he finally began to load his sleigh the floor broke under the load, the bags fell through and scattered toys all over the place.
So,frustrated,he decided he would go inside, have a coffee with a shot of whiskey. When he opened the cupboard,he found that the elves had drunk all his grog, and in his anger he dropped the coffee pot and so broke Mrs.Claus prizes possession.
Then the doorbell rang.Cursing all the way to the door,he opened itand there was a little angel with a great big Christmas tree who said, where would you like this tree put?
And that my friends is how the little anget came to be on top of the Christmas tree. |
|
Regards to my last I think Br O'Farrel's initial is J not G. Which would make his nick name JOFA. Time does dim the memory. Wonderful to hear that he is still plugging along. Hopefully he will make 100 and get a card from the Queen. |
|
Hi to all SJTC boys wishing you all a Merry Christmas for 2009. Just sitting having a red wine or three reading the tales of by gone years. I would like to add my spin on how Br O'Farrell got his nick name; GOFA. I had the pleasure of being taught sheetmetal by 'Goffa' back in '66-'69. The nickname came from his inital G and the first letters of his surname (GOFA). Hope 2010 sees the web site grow. Hey Ali small world we'll have to get the green socks and shirts out. |
|
Hi John,
I attended Abbotsford 1964-1967 and live permanently in Europe, therefore, I can't join the reunion in May and enjoy all the memories.
Will these photos you have so generously researched and collected be available for viewing or downloading at a later date?
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!

In answer to Glen Hardy's father Kimmick. The rumour started from one of the students. This kid who shall stay nameless was in the library and was looking in an encliypedia. Came across a picture of JFK swearing in by chief justic bla bla bla. The cheif justice looked liked Father Kimmock as he had a similar robe on and had white balding hair and wore glasses that looked the same. When this kid showed the picture to Father Kimmock and said is this you he answered yes. He said that the picture of him and JFK was not the swearing in of the president but a religous ceremony. So we all had a good look at this picture because it does look like him. I have researched this picture on the internet and there are other pictures taken from different angles and one picture clearly shows its not Father Kimmock. Soooooo, maybe there is another picture with Father Kimmock and JFK. I have not been able to find it. Father Kimmock was a great teacher and we all liked his American accent. Maybe one of our teachers who taught with him can shed some more light on this mystery. |

What is Shamus Gillen doing on the internet at one a.m. on a friday morning? Can't bag him too much though as he did drive me home after the SJTSM 15 year reunion in 1991. Seriously though, his extensive list of teachers and 1976 year 5 boys got me thinking about something I have always wanted to be confirmed. If my memory serves me right, the Father Kimmick that Shamus mentions was an American, and on 20 January 1961 he had an official role in the innauguration ceremony of JFK. Can anyone confirm? Probably an urban myth - but what a story if it is true. |
|
Greetings to all. Great to read the messages and see some old & bolds names appear. I attended St Joey's between 1971 - 1974 before attending the Juniorate at Bundoora in 1975. TEACHERS - THE NAMES!
Sometimes its hard to recall actually why teachers got their nicknames. Here are a couple from Abbotsford, see if you can remember why.
COATHANGER - Mrs Reynolds (No idea of her current whereabouts)
JOFFA BOY - Br O Farrell (And would you believe he is still with us!)
So there is your homework for this week

THE MOST IDIOTIC STUNT GOING TO SCHOOL ON TRAINS AWARD !!!
"Now most of us went to Joeys either South or Abbotsford by train.
Yes, there was mindless vandalism, plenty of spitting and some epic brawls. But I defy someone to top this stunt carried out by the legendary "Animal"- Mick Cahill (sadly Mick has now passed away)
Those who know the Hurstbridge line will know the very lofty, single track bridge over the Merri Creek at Clifton Hill. One day, Mick opened the doors (a blue train), climbed down the shunters step, then after grabbing the bottom rung, let his legs swing free while the train sped along! Bloody Maniac!
I seem to remember the Guard kicking all of us off at Westgarth! Even us morons were petrified for Mick. In later years I was a train Guard myself and had to deal with roof surfers etc, but nothing terrified me more than that trip with Mr Cahill.
I remember another time when a bunch of us started a brawl at Collingwood with the Cathedral College lads. I got collared by a cop and frogmarched to the Collingwood Cop Shop where I sat for hours until my old man showed up- another belting!
I could go on......"
my vote goes to Br Robertsons (sjsm) nephew -loosest canon on deck, can't remember his name. we used to swing along the gutters from door to door on the red rattlers, but i recall once him trying it from carriage to carriage as the train sped over the bridge from Flinders st to sth melb! he also climbed up onto the roof for a surf well before that was in vogue, and the final stray that saw him expelled was lobbing a "halvy" (half brick) off said bridge. vague recollections, i'll happily stand corrected on any of that.
also, someone remaining nameless let off an extinguisher from a central guards van between malvern and caulfield station necessitating an exit out the non platform side onto the tracks when we pulled up at caulfield and the whole place was swarming with cops! |

g'day blokes.
another year 11 in 85 er here.
Orlando, great to see your name top of the list! being from mordialloc and living around the cnr from the Parkers i was up to date with many of them, i bought a house a couple down from their dad but when he moved out 5 years ago i lost track. David from our year level lives (i believe) around Rutherglen, Bob (year below us) in W.A. Steve (year above us) was local, and i saw him in extended social groups, but haven't for a few years now.
Anthony Denahy, Mark Farrar, there are 2 name from the past! how are you guys?
i don't have any contact with anyone from sjsm anymore...was friends with mark sampson (hmmm) but...
still mates with his brother though- who didn't go to sj's.
gotta go

The Second Annual reunion !
Well, another great afternoon was had by all at Bryan Derricks fabulous 'Paladarr' Restaurant in Alphington. Great tucker and even better service!
In attendance were the following highly educated and pretty people from the 1978 Form 1 Abbotsford Class.
Bryan derrick, Daniel Rossimel, Shane Boyden (and his sister Caroline and husband Paul) Chris Rowland, Steve Hargood (and wife Julie) Peter Bone, Brother Serge Herrick, Bernie Ponton, Brett McKibbon, Matt Dalmau, Greg Moller, Maurice Hangar, Mandy Ellwood, Anthony Franklin, Mark Pittle, John Greaney, Paul Kenny (and wife Kathleen & Daughter Caitlin) Apologies recieved from Pat McKay, Dorothy Saaroni,Brother Peter Thrupp, Roy Keenan, Peter Orwin, Mark Vernal, Garry williams, Brett Dugdale, Kath Boyden, (Fmr Brother)Gerald Bourke, Matt Caddy.
So, a few from last year couldnt make it but we gained the smiling dials of Greg, Mandy and Chris!
So the "Joeys boys ride again" juggernaut rolls on.
Here's to the next gathering. If youare one of the lads or teachers and we haven't found you yet and you wish to be on our email contact list, please email me , we'd love to see you all again.
Check this site regularly- you would be surprised who you will find! Take Care Boys and Girls....JAGZ |
